A fake halal certification syndicate has been on the prowl in rural Malaysia, offering halal logos to food manufacturers, a report in the Star on May 31 said.
The scammers hold seminars which cost between RM250 and RM600, then give halal certification at the end of the event, without inspecting any premises or checking the ingredients used in the food, the report said.
In Malaysia, only JAKIM and the state religious affairs department may issue halal certification.
