UAE subsidises commodities over Ramadhan

AED350 million has been set aside to subsidise food throughout Ramadhan, the Emirates news agency WAM has reported.

According to WAM the UAE Ministry of Economy said the money will go towards discounting about 10,000 items by 50-75%. These items will be available for consumers at 650 co-op societies and sales outlets throughout the country.

Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Competitiveness and Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, also shared that the ministry has launched two programmes during the Year of Tolerance to ensure the happiness and satisfaction of consumers.

The first initiative saw the ministry find a solution to the problem of vehicles abandoned at maintenance workshops due to owners’ inability to pay outstanding charges. The ministry contacted both the agencies and owners of 580 vehicles that were abandoned in various emirates for more than six months. The ministry’s efforts resulted in the release of the vehicles from the workshops.

The second initiative was launched in cooperation with car dealerships and with the approval of the Car Committee. Vehicle owners may enjoy free technical inspections of their cars at the agencies’ workshops this year.
