This year, Bloem Singapore is running a flower workshop where mother and child can each create a bouquet or floral crown and give it to the other. With the first session on May 13 at the Laurent Cafe nearly sold out, the company has decided to hold a second session at the halal I Am Cafe.

Each participant receives a Bloem's Limited Edition Tool Kit, Brunch Meal and the fresh floral components for making a bespoke hand bouquet and floral crown. All creations can be taken home.

Sukri Kadola, Bloem's founder, explained that there is a clear segment of his clientele who are interested in participating at a halal eatery. "Doing business in Singapore is tricky - you want to be focused in your target market and to succeed you've got to have something to offer to your varied tastes and preferences of your customers," he said. "I am Cafe on Haji Lane is a halal establishment."

The Muslim community patronises Bloem mainly for bespoke flowers for wedding events, he said, whereas Bloem also maintains corporate accounts and caters to walk-in shoppers at the Heeren.

"I need to diversify and reach different markets, sometimes requiring me to repurpose my offerings and be sensitive to their requirements. If you make a small effort, you'll get noticed," he said.

Shopee commits RM1 million to support mompreneurship

Shopee has committed RM1 million to empower Malaysian mothers from all walks of life to be business owners (mompreneurs).

As a first step, Shopee will be extending its Free Shipping Program to the month of July to encourage mompreneurs to expand their businesses. In addition, Shopee will be spending time, effort and funds on educating them about e-commerce via Shopee University, as well as online and offline marketing campaigns to help mompreneurs start selling on Shopee.

Launched in December 2015, Shopee is a mobile-first, customer-to-customer (C2C) e-commerce marketplace that empowers entrepreneurs, both individuals and businesses, to buy and sell safely and securely on mobile.

With over 1 million users in Malaysia, the company announced that since the launch of its Free Shipping Program in collaboration with Pos Malaysia, more than 20,000 sellers have signed up to date. A substantial number of sellers on this programme have seen an uptick of two to three times their daily orders while some have seen an increase of up to ten times.

Cocaby owner, Alya Essya, a Shopee mompreneur said, “Thanks to Shopee, I can take care of my babies while earning extra income. With the launch of the Shopee Free Shipping Program, my business has grown into the East Malaysian market and I was appointed to be the sole distributor of Holabebe.”

Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee said, “There are three barriers that mompreneurs face in starting their online businesses – high costs structure, insufficient knowledge on how to sell online and lack of marketing exposure. With the extension of our Free Shipping Program, expansion of Shopee University and increased marketing efforts, we aim to convert 10,000 mompreneurs to start selling on Shopee by the end of the year.”

To kickstart this initiative, Shopee will be launching its Mighty Moms Challenge where a selected group of 20 mompreneurs will first be educated in Shopee University and then compete amongst themselves to be the top seller in Shopee. Cash prizes will be given to the winners to help them grow their business. In line with Shopee’s ongoing efforts to empower the community, participants in the Shopee Mighty Moms Challenge would include mompreneurs from the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), a non-profit organisation in Malaysia for women survivors of domestic violence and their children, helping them regain lives of safety and empowerment.

The Shopee Mighty Moms Challenge was announced at the inaugura lShopee Buka Puasa (iftar) get-together with media and partners end-June.

Ho added, “We are committed to empower entrepreneurs from all walks of life to do more. We hope that this collaboration with WAO can show that everyone and anyone can be an entrepreneur on Shopee and we will do our absolute best to provide the right support, education and funds to help you do so.”

Flowers the most popular gift for moms in Singapore

Gift Flowers Singapore's survey on how much Singaporeans intend to spend on their mothers this Mother's Day puts the budget at above S$20. The online florist is headquartered in Hong Kong and recently expanded into Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Over a third of the respondents surveyed said they would spend between S$20 and S$100 (38%) while 54% said they would spend between S$100 and S$200 on their mother. A minority (8%) said they would spend more than S$200.

Most will buy flowers

Flowers remain the most popular gift for Mother's Day, with 46% of respondents opting for them. This is closely followed by taking their mother out for a meal at 30%. Other popular gifts include jewellery (7%) and electronics (7%).

How consumers will shop

Almost eight in 10 (77%) of respondents said they would purchase gifts for their mothers online. Nearly half (46%) estimated they would spend between one and three hours shopping for Mother's Day presents this year. Another 14% said they would spend more than three hours shopping, and a third (30%) - either pressed for time or having already decided on the gift - said they would spend an hour or less.

The florist added that it is a myth that daughters will celebrate Mother's Day more often than sons. Sons will spend just as much on Mother's Day as the daughters, the survey revealed.

Philips Mobile Obstetrics Monitoring service to be commercially implemented in West Sumatra

Royal Philips has announced an agreement with the Sijunjung Regency in West Sumatra, Indonesia, for the full-scale commercial implementation - Philips’ first globally - of its Mobile Obstetrics Monitoring (MOM) service in the region.

This scalable smartphone-based digital health service is designed to identify mothers-to-be who are at high risk of pregnancy-related complications and help reduce maternal mortality rates. Expanding mobile monitoring coverage, it addresses both rural and urban needs. Philips works with PT Telkom, the largest telecommunication provider in Indonesia with a nationwide connectivity infrastructure, to ensure a robust and effective digital solution. The MOM telehealth service is planned to be introduced in other regions in Indonesia, India and Africa later this year.

The obstetrics monitoring solution enables midwives in remote locations to share vital measurements, observational data and mobile ultrasound images with obstetricians and gynecologists in the country’s larger hospitals and collaborate with them for improved decision making during pregnancy.  The service features two mobile phone apps. The first allows midwives to collect vital measurement data - e.g. weight, blood pressure, temperature - and sync it to the MOM web portal. The second lets doctors track this data and review a woman’s progress. Specialists at regional primary care centres can also access the data via a MOM web portal to monitor women’s conditions and identify high-risk pregnancies via a dashboard interface. Training and education are also provided as part of the service.

“Indonesia, with 255 million people living on more than 900 islands, still struggles with one of the highest rates*  of maternal death in the world partly due to the lack of access to healthcare services,” said Jeroen Tas, CEO Healthcare Informatics, Solutions and Services at Philips. “With the roll-out of our mobile obstetrics monitoring solution in West Sumatra we are helping to give people access to skilled healthcare personnel and the right technology at the right time. It’s a clear example of how digital technologies can facilitate preventative care and have a tremendous impact on the quality of care.”

In a one-year pilot project in collaboration with the Bunda Medical Center in Padang, Indonesia that was announced earlier, Philips' Mobile Obstetrics Monitoring solution increased the early detection of high-risk pregnancies threefold and helped expectant mothers to receive the medical monitoring and treatment they needed for a safe delivery. The pilot had over 650 pregnancies within the programme. Not a single woman died from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth through early monitoring and risk stratification.

“We are excited that West Sumatra is the first district in Indonesia to implement Mobile Obstetrics Monitoring,” said Health District Head Dr Edwin Suprayogi. “It is a challenge for many mothers in this district to travel from their home to the closest clinic, which means that high risk pregnancies are often not detected at an early stage. With the MOM programme, we aim to identify these women much faster so that they get access to the care they need. At the same time, the programme will also help us to track the effectiveness of individual healthcare workers so that we can improve their skills and further improve the quality of healthcare.”

The Mobile Obstetrics Monitoring solution is part of Philips’ strategy of providing connected care solutions that span locations and enable more people-focused integrated care, customised to address the local needs.

*World Health Organization (WHO) data on maternal death shows Indonesia recording 190 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2013, the third lowest results among ASEAN member states, despite Indonesia being the largest ASEAN economy. Specifically in West Sumatra, the maternal mortality rate is as high as 212 deaths per 100,000 live births, based on a survey by Andalas University in 2008 and published in the Health Ministry’s 2012 West Sumatra Health Profile.

Procter & Gamble's 'Thank You Mom' campaign shows majority of Singaporeans are close to their moms

Source: P&G.

In a recent survey conducted by Procter & Gamble (P&G) as part of its Thank You, Mom campaign, results showed that 82% of Singaporeans believe that they have a “very close or close” relationship with their mothers.

The survey, which polled over 300 Singaporeans between 18 to 34 years of age, found that 62% of respondents would share selected details about their life with their mothers while 22% would “tell [my] mom everything”.

However, despite being close to their moms, only 5% of Singaporeans would say ‘I love you’ to show appreciation. Almost half (46%) would rather show affection by “giving her something she likes” and 29% would demonstrate this by “helping her with household chores”.

Madam Heng Aik Shian, Associate Director of Procter & Gamble, Singapore Country Sales & Asean e-Commerce said, “We have always placed significant emphasis on the importance of family and as a proud sponsor of Moms, the P&G Thank You, Mom campaign is driven by appreciation for the most important women in our lives."

P&G collaborated with local artistes and designers to create themed content in support of the Thank You, Mom campaign. These include the specially designed Thank You, Mom EZ-Link cards and voluntary work with Habitat for Humanity in the local community.

Source: P&G. The three EZ-Link card designs designed by Grace Ciao.

Grace Ciao, a Singapore fashion illustrator whose signature style involves integrating real flower petals into her illustrations, has designed a series of three EZ-Link cards themed around mothers and SG50 for the P&G Thank You, Mom campaign. To get these limited edition cards, shoppers at NTUC FairPrice simply have to spend S$30 on any participating P&G brand to redeem the cards from June 1 to July 31, 2015.

As part of SG50, P&G recently supported Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s Project HomeWorks to clean 50 homes in support of improving safety and sanitation in the homes of the elderly, sick and physically-challenged. Project HomeWorks aims to help the less fortunate in our society who are unable to clean their homes and as a result, live in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions. By mobilising volunteers in the community, this project seeks to ensure no one has to live in an unsafe or unhygienic environment.
