The annual handover ceremony takes place at the headquarters of the factory in Makkah which makes the covering. The covering, known as the kiswah of the Ka'abah (كسوة الكعبة), incorporates 700 kg of raw silk and 120 kg of silver and gold wire, and costs an estimated SR22 million a year.
The kiswah is then draped over the Ka'abah on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah.
