The world's largest halal showcase, Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), is gearing up for its international debut after 20 successful editions in Malaysia.

MIHAS is set to launch MIHAS@Dubai as part of the 22nd Middle East Organic and Natural Product Expo at Dubai World Trade Centre from November 18 to 20, 2024. The event is expected to help expand the halal economy by connecting the UAE and Malaysia's halal ecosystem with others worldwide.

"The debut of MIHAS in an overseas market marks a significant milestone in its global expansion, offering Malaysian exhibitors an unparallelled platform to access the thriving international halal market. Showcasing in Dubai - one of the world's prominent trade hubs - enables Malaysian businesses, particularly SMEs, to broaden their reach, forge strategic partnerships, and seize valuable opportunities for sustained growth in the international market," said Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, CEO, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). MATRADE organises MIHAS.

MIHAS@Dubai comes close on the heels of MIHAS Malaysia being recognized by the Guinness World Records for having the largest attendance for a halal trade show. In 2024, MIHAS Malaysia attracted 43,353 visitors from over 90 countries and featured 2,028 booths from 66 nations in Kuala Lumpur from September 17 to 20, 2024.

"MIHAS@Dubai represents a pivotal moment as the first step in the internationalisation of MIHAS. By placing our products at the heart of a major international trade hub, this initiative empowers our businesses, especially SMEs, to extend their market reach, forge lasting strategic partnerships and capitalise on new growth opportunities, setting the stage for long-term global success," added Datuk Mohd.

"The upcoming show will be very significant for both the region as well as the industry since it will witness the global debut of an event that is considered as the nerve centre of the global halal ecosystem," said P Ravi, Director, Global Links Exhibition Organizers & Conferences, organiser of the organics expo.

Mihas@Dubai will help nearly double the number of exhibitors at the organics expo to 550 for its upcoming show. Malaysia will also be the country partner for the Middle East Organic and Natural Product Expo 2024 and will be one of 20 country pavilions at the event.

"MIHAS@Dubai and country partner Malaysia will bring together more than 200 exhibitors and can play a pivotal role in advancing the halal and organic industries in the Middle East. Key avenues for this growth include certification and standards, trade partnerships, investment opportunities, knowledge transfer, and consumer awareness, among others," added Ravi.

The UAE is positioning itself to lead the US$3 T global halal sector. The country is committed to help the region gain from advanced legislative and regulatory aspects while also integrating modern technology for the sustainable development of the halal industry.

"The trade fair is merely the starting point – a gateway for showcasing our products and making initial connections. The true potential lies beyond the event itself, in the lasting relationships, market expansion and trade opportunities that our exhibitors, particularly SMEs, can leverage long after the fair ends. It paves the way for new partnerships, sustained business growth and a broader global impact that will continue to benefit our businesses and the economy for years to come," concluded Datuk Mohd.

*SME stands for small and medium-sized enterprise.

Hajj 2024 ends

The KSA Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has celebrated the completion of the Hajj season for 2024 (1445) at an event honouring distinguished Hajj Offices and award recipients. The government also shared a blueprint and timeline for the 2025 (1446) Hajj season.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the KSA Minister of Health, Fahd Al-Jalajel, announced 465,000 medical services were conducted for pilgrims, including 141,000 services provided to unauthorised pilgrims. Al-Jalajel disclosed that all of the dead had been identified and their families notified.

The SPA separately reported that the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has begun issuing umrah visas. The move traditionally begins immediately after the Hajj season.

Gelatin finds new applications

The Gelatin: Insights Into & Future of the Worldwide Market 2016-2024 report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

Gelatin continues to see demand from the food sector. Gelatin comes mainly from bovine hides and pig skin, but  there is increasing interest in non-mammalian sources of gelatin such as fish. Halal gelatin is also emerging as a niche market segment in the food and pharma sectors. In pharmaceuticals, low awareness and a lack of stringent religious restrictions is holding back progress for halal gelatin.

There are however many gelatin alternatives, such as carrageenan, rice starch and xanthan gum. These are growing in popularity. Potato-based starch solutions in particular are set to replace gelatin in sugar confectionery.

Europe dominates global consumption, while the Asia-Pacific region spearheads current and future market growth.

Hindrances to growth include cultural and religious specifications, ethical concerns, and a shift to vegetarianism.

Among the findings:

- Developing countries in Asia offer potential growth opportunities

 - A bright outlook is projected for the gelatin market in India, with the country being a leading exporter

- Edible gelatin is driving growth in China, especially demand for functional foods

- In Australia, osteoarthritis is driving demand for gelatin supplements

- The pharmaceutical sector is a leading market for gelatin in India

Companies mentioned in the report include Capsugel (US), Darling Ingredients (US), Ewald Gelatine (Germany), Gelita (Germany), Geltech (South Korea), Nitta Gelatin (Japan), Sterling Biotech (India), and Suheung (South Korea).

Global halal market expected to boom

The global halal market was valued at US$5.73 trillion in 2016 and is expected to grow due to a rising Muslim population, rising spend and increasing availability of halal products and services.

The Islamic finance sector has witnessed tremendous growth over the past few years with the emergence of crowd funding platforms including Human Crescent. Lack of awareness has resulted in an enormous opportunity for products and services offered by this segment. The segment is likely to grow at a CAGR of 10.5% from 2017 to 2024, says Hexa Research.

Speedy growth of economies in the Middle East and Southeast Asia are expected to augment the growth of the market owing to the presence of a large Muslim population. These economies are likely to emerge as popular destinations for food and fashion. The Middle East halal market is expected to witness a double-digit growth generating revenues of US$6.53 trillion by 2024.

The demand for qualified halal products among non-Muslim customers has been on the upsurge as more consumers are looking for high superiority, safe and righteous products*. Non-Muslim consumers in Asia Pacific are likely to play a vital role in driving the regional market making it the second largest marketplace after the Middle East, contributing to 30.9% of the global revenues by 2024.

The Islamic economy is being driven primarily by the increasing youth population with high disposable incomes. These factors are likely to drive segments of the halal market such as fashion, food, finance, travel, as well as media and recreation.

Several food companies including KFC and Nestle are already offering halal products to their Muslim consumers. The emergence of Islamic finance institutions offering finance and banking assets are expected to provide further impetus to businesses that are focusing on venturing into the halal industry

Key players analysed include:

• Diana Kotb

• INAYAH

• Al-Rajhi Bank

• Al-Salam Bank

• MMA Bio Lab

• Ivy Beauty Corporation

• Nema Food Company

• Midamar

• Chemical Company of Malaysia (CCM Pharmaceuticals)

• Pharmaniaga

Asia Pacific region dominates in halal food demand

The global halal food market is anticipated to reach US$2.55 trillion by 2024, driven by the rising demand for the consumption of halal meat. The growing awareness of halal food and its positioning as hygienic and healthy food among both Muslim and non-Muslim* community is expected to drive the demand over the forecast period, Hexa Research has said.

The leading markets are Asia Pacific and Middle East regions, which have a considerable concentration of the around 1.8 billion global Muslim population as of 2015. The Asia Pacific region has the highest market share in terms of revenue (US$594 billion) and is projected to maintain its dominance in the market over the forecast period (2014-2024), the consultancy said. A growing Muslim population, especially in India and Indonesia, and the more awareness among consumers in the region from countries such as Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines are expected to drive the market over the forecast period.

The absence of a uniform halal standard across countries makes it challenging for vendors to get their products halal-certified. Hexa Research says there is a need for oversight on the halal food industry considering the halal meat scandals in Europe and North America regions.

Processed food & beverages dominated the market, contributing US$836.6 billion in 2016. This segment is expected to maintain its leading position over the forecast period as well. The food & beverage segment is followed by the baked products segments and confectionery segments. Over the forecast period, baked goods are expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.6% with an increasing demand for ready-to-eat and packaged products such as cookies, doughnuts, savoury pastries, pretzels, biscuits and cakes.

Some of the leading players operating in the halal food market are Al Islami Foods, QL Foods, Saffron Road Food, Dagang Halal, Janan Meat, Kawan Foods, Cargill, Prima Agri-Products, Nestle and Cleone Foods. Over the past few years, fast food chains such as KFC and McDonald's have started providing halal certified products to widen their customer base, Hexa Research said.

Hexa Research also put the global halal market at 1.8 billion Muslims as of 2015, and said halal demand has gone beyond consumable products to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and service sector components such as marketing, logistics, and packaging.

*This is often repeated but non-Muslims typically express no interest in whether there is halal certification for a product because it is more hygienic or healthier. They will buy a product because it is positioned that way irrespective of whether it is halal. They are interested however in whether there was cruelty to animals involved and may buy a halal product because it has not been tested on animals.

Halal products market expected to grow through to 2024

ReportBuyer has released an overview of the halal products market from Transparency Market Research. The global halal products market is highly lucrative, with the meat, processed food and beverage segments being the most attractive market in 2015. This market is also highly diversified, covering food and beverage products to personal care and pharmaceutical products.

The growing Muslim population is one of the prime factors pushing the demand for halal products market. It is estimated that 26.4% of the global population is expected to be Muslim by 2030 as compared to 19.9% in 1990. The growth rate is much faster compared to other religions. In addition to this, rising purchasing power of the Islamic countries due to the rapid growth in their economy, especially in Middle East and Southeast Asia. Further, consumption of halal products among the non-Muslim population is also on the rise.

Improvement of the retail sector is another major factor which is the currently driving the demand for halal products market across the globe. There has been an improvement in halal certification standards, in the quality of retail outlets selling halal-certified products, as well as a high degree of globalisation and multilateral trade agreements which have boosted the trade flow of halal products.

However, the lack of uniformity for halal standards is a major factor barring the growth of the market. Due to the absence of global halal standards, companies must get the halal certification from the Islamic regulatory organisation from each country separately. Paradoxically, the definition of halal may be different in different countries. Due to this, products accepted by the halal certification board of one country may not be accepted in other countries.

The small scale of halal product manufacture means that most of the countries with a high demand for high demand for halal products are heavily dependent on imports from other countries. In order to reduce the over-dependency on imports, the governments of some of the countries with a high Muslim population (or high halal demand) are offering big incentives to companies to manufacture halal products and promote the use of halal-certified goods.

In terms of revenue, primary meat and processed food accounted for the major market share in 2015 and is expected to witness a major surge in demand by the end of the forecast period, in 2024. Pharmaceuticals held the second-largest market share in 2015, but the market is expected to witness a decline by the end of the forecast period.

The Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa regions accounted for more than 85% of the total market in 2015 combined, and they are expected to continue dominating the market throughout the forecast period.

Some of the key players operating in this field include Nestle, The Coca Cola Company, Kellogg's, Krafts Food Group, Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline and L'Oreal.
