Inaugural Halal Ingredients Asia in KL

UBM Asia and the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) are organising Halal Ingredients Asia, which is designed to be a regional gathering and market place for halal ingredient professionals and industry players.

Halal Ingredients Asia will be held from 21 to 23 September 2015 alongside a conference on 22 to 23 September 2015. Both events will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This inaugural show focuses on halal ingredients and will support and accelerate the development of the halal sector in Asia. The ingredients on show include additives, colourings, flavours & fragrances, oleo chemical based produce and seasonings.

Food Ingredients Asia 2015 includes a focus on seafood

UBM Asia Thailand is preparing to organise Food ingredients Asia 2015, on September 9 to 11, 2015 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC). In celebration of the 20th Fi Asia Edition, UBM Asia Thailand is joining hands with public and private agencies to organise activities to support Thai enterprises. The company expects over 25% growth, targeting a 1,000 million baht turnover in the food industry and identifying rising food trends.

Seafood was highlighted as one of the bright spots for the food industry at the opening ceremony. Dr Nantiya Unprasert, an advisor to the Thai Frozen Foods Association, reveals that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has a policy to support and prepare Thailand to become an ASEAN Seafood Hub.

"With its constantly developing fishing industry, Thailand has exported fishery products for a long time, as its geographical advantages and fertile resources are perfect for fishing. The kingdom's total export value of frozen shrimp, squid and tuna around the world accounts for more than 3 trillion baht, making these product categories among the country's highest income-generating agricultural products, " she said.

Thai entrepreneurs are specialised in food processing and internationally recognised, she added. "In order to push Thailand to become an ASEAN Seafood Hub and increase its export volume, entrepreneurs need to acquire knowledge of food ingredients and food additives, as each importing country has different regulations. Therefore, they should strictly abide by those regulations and use them to create opportunities and satisfaction," she said.

An international halal food seminar by the National Food Institute will also be held as part of the event.

Vietnamese interest in deep ocean minerals, says PDOB

Pacific Deep Ocean Biotech Company (PDOB)  is determined to make its Enriched Deep Ocean Minerals (DOM) a household name in Asian nutrition. The company has already launched DOM in Taiwan, mainland China, Japan, and Australia, and introduced DOM to Vietnam at the Food ingredients Vietnam trade show. The rollout will continue with Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and India in the next six months.

Said Harry Chai, Global Business Development Manager, PDOB: "Vietnamese companies embraced our standardised, enriched Deep Ocean Mineral ingredients with unprecedented enthusiasm. The rapidly expanding Vietnamese nutrition and supplement industry saw immediate application for our DOM products in the sports performance and cholesterol control segments. One beverage manufacturer saw the value of DOM's 'natural' claim and wanted to use it in their natural sports and energy drink formulations."

PDOB supplies standardised and customised deep ocean mineral compounds from the deep ocean waters located at the east coast of Taiwan for the beverage and nutritional supplement industry. The mineral solutions are certified halal. The main applications for beverages are associated with fatigue relief and accelerated recovery after physical challenges. 

Starch industry eyeing Middle East

The city of Istanbul will host the StarchWorld Mideast: Starch Derivatives, Sweeteners & Polyols conference against the backdrop of the Middle East being the highest F&B growth area and a big market for halal products. 

The conference, which runs from 4 to 5 November at the Elite World Istanbul Hotel, aims to draw industry attention to emerging opportunities in starch, food and industrial markets in the Middle East.

The Middle East region represents the highest growth area for the food and drink industry in the world. The rapidly changing demographics in the region and the growth of consumer choices presents an exciting opportunity for the food ingredients world to offer new products and solutions. 

Starch can be used in many applications, including emulsifiers, stabilisers, thickening agents, and coated papers.  Increasing applications within the food and beverages sector is the strongest driver for the global modified starch market, but there are also opportunities for starch in industrial use.

Starch producers from Turkey to Egypt are expanding their production capacities to take advantage of the regions’ untapped opportunities. One of the highlights in the industry last year was the news that Cargill and Arasco had created the first starches and sweeteners joint venture in Saudi Arabia, Middle East for Food Solutions Co (MEFSCO). 

The summit kickstarts with a Global Overview of the Sugar Economy, Trade and how this Impacts the Markets for Starch-based Sweeteners in the Mideast Region by Simon Bentley, Senior Consultant, LMC International, and is followed by Nedim Elcheik, Market Development Director of Cargill Tarim Ve Gida San. Tic., who will give an update on corn milling joint venture operations with Arasco in Saudi Arabia in a session titled Regional Starch & Sweetener Markets Outlook.
