New hotel in Amman offers large range of room and dining options

The Ritz-Carlton, part of Marriott Bonvoy's portfolio of hotel brands, has opened The Ritz-Carlton, Amman, at the prestigious Fifth Circle. The new hotel features 228 guest rooms over 20 stories in seven categories, including 34 suites.

"We are thrilled to bring The Ritz-Carlton brand to Amman, embodying our commitment to delivering unparallelled experiences and creating meaningful memories in the world's most exciting markets," said Donna McNamara, VP and Global Brand Leader for The Ritz-Carlton.

"From exquisite culinary craftmanship to treasured family moments, The Ritz-Carlton, Amman will embrace guests with its legendary service, and offer a unique lens on this charming capital city."

Led by Wimberly Interiors London, the hotel's design is inspired by the culture and history of Jordan, which is reflected in the hotel's bold interior architecture, tailored lighting, Art Deco touches and contemporary artistry. Artistic elements within the hotel draw inspiration from the landscape of the kingdom, from natural rifts of the sea and saturated colors of the earth to the deep crevices of caves and mountains.

The structures of Petra are reflected in a series of vignettes, while Roman and Nabatean architectural features are given modern reinterpretations throughout the hotel. The floor finishes in the guest corridors pay homage to Jordan's desert landscape, and the guestrooms take inspiration from the destination's natural elements, sand and sea.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amman offers a wide range of dining options. Rising over the Amman skyline on the hotel's 20th floor is the signature restaurant, Roberto's. Already a much-loved fixture on Dubai's culinary scene, the arrival of Roberto's is expected to redefine the concept of authentic Italian fine dining in Jordan.

Guests can also indulge at Ambros, a relaxed dining option in the lobby serving unique seasonal produce and reimagined classics. Iris, also in the hotel lobby, is a tea lounge and pâtisserie featuring a selection of signature eclairs and high tea experiences. At Sarab Garden, visitors can enjoy shisha lounge and upscale regional cuisine. The Founders Room delivers an elevated menu offering sophisticated bites.

Opening this summer, Soleil will appeal to guests looking for healthy dining with its focus on vegetarian dishes and a coffee roastery. Legends, a sports lounge with American-style culinary fare, is set to open later this year.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amman is home to a wide array of facilities for corporate guests, including a 1,050 sq m Grand Ballroom, five meeting rooms, one boardroom, and a luxurious Club Lounge. The Ritz-Carlton Spa is a full-service spa and wellness centre offering ESPA products, indoor and outdoor temperature-controlled pools, six treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge and the largest jacuzzi in Amman.

"The property delivers an exceptional standard of luxury and refinement - one that redefines elegance and hospitality in Jordan and the wider region. We are thrilled to unveil this stunning property and look forward to welcoming guests with a level of care and passion that will be sure to delight and exceed expectations."

Al Joud Boutique Hotel offers better than three-star value

The opening of Al Joud Boutique Hotel in Makkah, KSA is just one of several J/Brice Design International engagements in the kingdom that include the first Kempinski Hotel, several eateries, family entertainment venues, and a royal family villa.

Said Jeffrey Brice Ornstein, whose firm is based in Jeddah, KSA and Boston in the US, "Since the pilgrimage is the holiest event for devout Muslims who come from all walks of life, we wanted guests enjoy an upscale feeling during their often once-in a lifetime journey. We've succeeded by creating an upscale 21st century environment for a global market that serves guests from both wealthy and poorer countries."

While rated at three stars, hospitality insiders report that the 124-guestroom hotel, located among pricier properties, offers superior finishes, fixtures and amenities and delivers greater value than other comparably rated hotels in the vicinity of the Ka'abah and other religious sites.

"An Arabian motif is carried out throughout the property in natural, high-end materials—walnut, alabaster and marble. Contemporary crystal lighting fixtures add elegance to a lobby furnished with inviting upholstered pieces in understated sand and desert sunset hues. Custom carpeting repeats the patterns in umber and orange tones set against a marble floor, all of which draw upon the palate of Arabian sunsets," explained Ornstein.

J/Brice directed the interior design of the Kempinski Towers that opened in Al Khobar, KSA in 2015 as well as The Grand Heritage Hotel and Spa in Doha, Qatar. Ornstein added, "Over a dozen years ago we made a strong commitment to the Arab world. We developed a sensitivity to the region, absorbing everything from religion, classic art, music and design to popular culture. Being asked to design a hotel whose primary goal is to appeal to devout Muslims is an honor and culmination of our ability to internalise the Arabian sensibilities and aesthetics."

Shaza hits sweet spot for halal travel

Chris Nader talks about Shaza's positioning.
Nader talks about Shaza's positioning.
Shaza Hotels – an affiliate of Kempinski, wants to be the world's leading Muslim-friendly hotel brand. The brand hits a sweet spot where other brands are not playing, says Chris Nader, VP, Shaza Hotels.

First off, there is currently high demand for halal-friendly services but a low supply of quality halal acommodation around the world, Nader said at the recent Halal-In-Travel Asia Summit.

"Investors are shy to invest in halal travel especially outside of OIC countries. The key focus is that Muslim travellers don't always travel in Muslim countries. This is where the investment opportunity is."

"When you Google 'halal hotel', 'dry hotels', 'shari'ah-compliant hotels' – the image of halal tourism that (you get is that) you're providing accommodation that looks like it is coming from the 1800s," he added.

Third, there are brands which are not built on values that are halal, but which provide token support such as Ramadhan timings, he continued.

Source: Shaza Hotels website. Bedroom at the Shaza Riyadh.
Source: Shaza Hotels website. Bedroom at the Shaza Riyadh.
Shaza addresses these challenges as a luxury, high-quality, halal-friendly accommodation platform that can be found around the world. The food and beverages are halal; there are prayer facilities, segregation of the wet areas, privacy and respectful entertainment, Nader said.

"It takes a lot of education to design a (property) for our market," he commented. Among the considerations for halal travel are the ability to rent swimming pools for privacy, and separate pools for ladies. The pools tend to be situated on the rooftop so that they are impossible to see from the rooms, Nader said.

Nader disclosed that Shaza's loyalty programme has 11 million members. "Niche doesn't mean small. Niche means specialised," he said.

Details:

Shaza has two brands, Shaza for five-star accommodation, and Mysk which is more high-tech and  fronts its four-star properties. Mysk offers 30 sq m rooms whereas Shaza rooms may be 45 to 50 sq m.

In 2018, Shaza opened the Shaza Makkah in KSA, complementing the Shaza Al Madina. The Shaza Riyadh and the Shaza Jeddah are expected online soon. New Shaza properties are coming online in Doha, Qatar and Salalah, Oman in 2019.

Mysk by Shaza, Al Mouj, can be found in Muscat, Oman, while Mysk Kuwait, opposite the Messilah beach district, opens early 2020 and Mysk the Palm in Jumeirah is to open before Expo 2020 in Dubai, UAE.

Other hotels are planned in Lombok, Indonesia; Colombo Sri Lanka, and Muscat, Oman.

The capsules are light and measure 2.64 sq m with a height of 1.2 m. Designed to provide privacy, safety, and hotel-like facilities with smart electronic controls, the capsules can also be stacked side by side and up to two units high.

“The hotel capsule is designed to serve Hajj guests by providing an efficient and ideal economic solution in crowded places,” said the association President Mansour Al-Amer. “It will feature most required facilities, including showers, irons, storage space, and safe deposit boxes.”

Al-Amer said 24 hotel capsules will be studied and examined in the field by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute. Twenty-four units will be located in Mina, and expected to be used by elderly and exhausted pilgrims.

Kampong Glam is along Bussorah Street.
The CUBE Boutique Capsule Hotel at Kampong Glam adds another 56 beds to RB Hospitality's capsule portfolio, which offers affordable, restored heritage accommodation located in popular conservation and cultural enclaves. The company has another successful capsule hotel in Chinatown, Singapore.

RB Hospitality's Co-Founders CEO Benedict Choa and COO Sonia Anya Tay decided to invest in capsule hotels after noticing that there were few affordable single-room options for family stays.

“Kampong Glam is chosen for its vibrancy, charm and rich heritage culture. In addition to the Sultan Mosque and the Malay Heritage Centre, there are a number of shops, cafes, restaurants and other bustling sites such as the hip Haji Lane (nearby). The Bugis MRT Station is only a five-minute walk away,” said Tay.

The CUBE Boutique Capsule Hotel at Kampong Glam is along the Kampong Glam Heritage Trail and targets digitally-inclined travellers. A number of Muslim guests have chosen the hotel for its proximity to Sultan Mosque. CUBE has also attracted business travellers who appreciate convenient, affordable capsule accommodation. For an extra level of security and privacy, female travellers can choose to stay in the women-only rooms.

“Our guests are typically 18-35 years old global explorers including founders of new generation businesses and special interest groups. The positive interest shown in our properties has inspired us to create a new CUBE Capsule concept which we aim to open before the end of this year. This is very much in line with our vision to grow the number of CUBE Boutique Capsule Hotels to eight in Singapore in the next few years,” added Tay.

Named after the neighbouring streets, room configurations vary between two and 18 capsules. Measuring 6 ft x 3 ft x 4ft for a single and 6 ft x 5 ft x 4 ft for a queen with plush mattresses and linen, each capsule is designed to enable easy moderation of its own temperature and airflow; and is insulated to reduce ambient noise.

The shared bathrooms offer standing showers, a hairdryer and bath toiletries. Guests are provided with a dental kit, slippers and one towel upon check-in and this is exchangeable daily. A washing machine with complimentary detergent is also available for guests while work desks are also provided for guests’ use.

Besides complimentary Wi-Fi, guests can also enjoy a daily breakfast showcasing local flavours in a relaxed communal dining area. There are a wide range of halal food & beverage outlets nearby. Guests can also log onto the Dining Butler, a smartphone tech solution, for food orders and delivery.

The Singapore Visitor Centre is located in the hotel lobby, allowing easy booking of tours to popular locations. Reception staff are available 24x7.

“In line with our fundamental approach to customer service at Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, we really wanted to provide a bespoke experience for our wellness guests,” said Virginia Cogliati, Director of Spa at Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara. “In addition, we have the unique offering of private pool villas in which guests seeking more solitude on their journey to wellbeing can enjoy activities and meals on their own personal pool terrace.”

Available in three, five or seven-day packages, the retreats include rejuvenating spa treatments, purification therapy and nutritious cuisine along with individual activity sessions such as yoga and hiking the mountainous coast of Salalah. Full board dining centred on nutrition is designed to encourage good health and fuel the body efficiently. Guests will also receive additional discounts on all spa and wellness treatments depending on the length of their stay.

The Balance Wellness by Anantara menu has been created by Italian vegan chef Valeria Agnelutto. Designed to detoxify and energise the system while delivering maximum flavour, dishes include Italian pasta e fagioli (beans) and chickpea burgers with rosemary and parsley and veggie mayo. The three-course meals also include  starters such as avocado tartare with cucumber and dates and raw tiramisu for dessert. Each dish comes with a detailed nutritional breakdown and is accompanied by vitamin-packed raw juice.

One highlight of the wellness programme is experiencing Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara's luxury hammam (steam bath), the only one in the region. The ritual starts with a steam bath in preparation for a black soap cleansing and kessa mitt* exfoliation to sweep impurities. Once steamed and scrubbed, a Moroccan Rhassoul** treatment nourishes and rehydrates skin.
