Beware of cyber scams this Mother’s Day
Cybercriminals may inject malicious emails or fake surveys in the welter of activities around Mother’s Day, Symantec has warned.
At risk is personal information such as credit details and passwords, so think twice before answering those Perfect Mother’s Day Gift Based on Your Mum’s Personality surveys, the security vendor warns.
Cybercriminals are using social engineering which involves research and reconnaissance, reviewing social media profiles, and the online activity to craft personalised and convincing phishing emails*.
As retail brands promote their Mother’s Day gifts, cybercriminals may push out fake websites, emails or social posts offering attractive discounts but in reality, are luring users to click on malicious links. Cybercrime victims in Singapore lost an average of S$545 just last year**.
Some tips on online protection include:
· Think before you click – opening the wrong attachment can introduce malware to your system. Delete emails from senders you don’t know, and don’t click on attachments or links on suspicious-looking emails.
· If an offer sounds too good to be true, it just might be. Beware of the pitfalls of clicking on links from social media sites. Before clicking, hover the mouse over the link to see its destination. Only click on links that lead to reputable, official company pages.
· Don’t put off installing security software such as Norton Security and updating it regularly.
· What you share online puts you at risk for socially engineered attacks. Limit the amount of personal information shared on social networks and online, including login information, birth dates and pet names.

Flowers the most popular gift for moms in Singapore
Gift Flowers Singapore's survey on how much Singaporeans intend to spend on their mothers this Mother's Day puts the budget at above S$20. The online florist is headquartered in Hong Kong and recently expanded into Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Over a third of the respondents surveyed said they would spend between S$20 and S$100 (38%) while 54% said they would spend between S$100 and S$200 on their mother. A minority (8%) said they would spend more than S$200.
Most will buy flowers
Flowers remain the most popular gift for Mother's Day, with 46% of respondents opting for them. This is closely followed by taking their mother out for a meal at 30%. Other popular gifts include jewellery (7%) and electronics (7%).
How consumers will shop
Almost eight in 10 (77%) of respondents said they would purchase gifts for their mothers online. Nearly half (46%) estimated they would spend between one and three hours shopping for Mother's Day presents this year. Another 14% said they would spend more than three hours shopping, and a third (30%) - either pressed for time or having already decided on the gift - said they would spend an hour or less.
The florist added that it is a myth that daughters will celebrate Mother's Day more often than sons. Sons will spend just as much on Mother's Day as the daughters, the survey revealed.

Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia partners with Beyond Social Services to show appreciation to mothers
Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia and Beyond Social Services, a Singapore voluntary welfare organisation, held a baking class for underprivileged children and youth on 9 May 2015 to celebrate Mother's Day.
Eighteen children and youths, accompanied by 21 employees, had the opportunity to bake rainbow cakes in appreciation and gratitude to their mothers. The baking class provided a warm and friendly experiential learning environment that allowed for uninhibited conversations between the children, youth and employees of Konica Minolta, who had volunteered to be a part of the initiative. Through the baking class, the volunteers developed a deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by the children and youth that they had interacted with. The volunteers also shared valuable life lessons and stories, as a way of motivating the children and youth to aspire to achieve their goals.
"Our joint initiative with Beyond Social Services is part of our ongoing efforts to contribute positively to the local community. We believe no contribution is too small and everyone can play an active part to serve the community. Hence, we strongly encourage our staff, at all levels, to participate in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities which we organise at least once every quarter. The CSR activity is in line with the management's philosophy - The Creation of New Value, in which we strive to realise our vision as a global company that is vital to society and an innovative company that is robust and constantly evolving by delivering new value to help customers and society solve the challenges they face," said Celine Chelsea Long, Regional Marketing Manager, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia.
"Here at Beyond Social Services, our mission is to curb delinquency among underprivileged young people and their families and to move them beyond their problems. We believe that our work will have a longer lasting impact if more members of the community take an active interest in their well-being. Hence we are always on the lookout for opportunities to work with community partners such as Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia who are willing to lend a helping hand and reach out to the children and youth," commented Anne-Marie Ong, community worker, Beyond Social Services.
