Funds sought to accommodate 200 special-needs students in Islamic classes this year

Singapore-based My Islamic Journey (MIJ) Education Hub, established in 2011, is running a crowdfunding campaign to pay for better facilities and services around Islamic education for special needs children and adults.

The facility offers weekly Islamic classes conducted by qualified asatizahs who are also certified in early-childhood and special-needs education. The special-needs students are individuals aged 5 to 25 who may be on the autism spectrum or have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, Down's syndrome or global developmental delays (GDD). The classes focus on
unambiguous, explicit teaching strategies, individual learning strengths as well as preferred learning styles.

"We believe that all students can learn.. just perhaps not on the same day or the same way," runs a statement on the MIJ website.

MIJ has more than 200 students enrolled this year for seerah, fiqh (فقه) - the theory of Islamic law, tauheed (توحيد) - the concept of monotheism - and Quran memorisation classes, but MIJ's current premises is too small for an enrolment of this size. Rather than turn anyone away, MIJ is now seeking funds for a bigger space that will be renovated to accommodate their students' learning challenges.

It needs about US$105,000 to fully expand the school but will work with whatever amount is raised. MIJ already relies on donations to subsidise lessons for students from low-income or working-class families. Only 27 of MIJ's 200 students are currently paying the full fees.

The proposed space is to have therapy and gym rooms to help special-needs students who are kinaesthetic learners*. The funds will also help the school buy equipment and teaching aids, with the money budgeted as follows:

US$21,000: therapy and gym rooms
US$21,000: teaching materials, audio-visual aids, computers and other teaching aids
US$49,000: renovations
US$14,000: office/school equipment

Programmes offered by MIJ include Tafsir & Hadith for Ladies, Quranic Tahsin for Ladies, Basic Quranic Literacy for Ladies, Fiqh & Solat for Youths and Young Muslims, Arabic tuition for madrasah students and a Muslim toddlers’ club.

The founders of MIJ, Faraliza Zainal and Ali Dawood, are themselves parents of a special needs teen. Their son is autistic and is now learning to call the adhan (أَذَان‎‎, the call to prayer before salah). He communicates and performs his salah (صلاة, the five obligatory daily prayers) diligently.

MIJ is at 61, Ubi Ave 2, AML Building, #08-06 Singapore 408898

Donate to MIJ by end-February 2017 - the goal stated on the crowd-funding page is US$40,000, short of the budgeted amount.

*A kinaesthetic learner is one who can register and process information the most via physical movement.

Etihad Airways has launched a new range of collectible limited edition Business Class amenity kits, the result of a unique collaboration between the airline and luxury travel brand LUXE City Guides, the guide for savvy travellers. The kits embody the flair synonymous with the Etihad Airways brand, and contain inflight amenities and natural facial products developed exclusively by London-based skincare and grooming brand Scaramouche + Fandango.

Six new stylised kit designs have been created by LUXE City Guides for Etihad Airways, inspired by some of the iconic cities on the airline’s extensive global network. The designs for Abu Dhabi, London and Madrid, have been specially produced for Etihad Airways, whilst the Los Angeles, Sydney and Hong Kong kits feature bespoke LUXE artwork. The initial limited edition offering will be expanded at a later stage, with new designs and more cities to be launched.

Each kit contains a customised Etihad Airways LUXE City Guide which corresponds to the showcased city, covering everything from hotels and restaurants, to spas, bars, boutiques and bespoke shopping, as well as services, specialists and personal guides. Scaramouche + Fandango has developed a unisex comfort kit and skincare offering in collaboration with Etihad Airways. Specially formulated for skincare needs inflight, the range consists of parabens-free products, high in natural ingredients, to enhance onboard wellbeing.

Calum Laming, Etihad Airways’ Vice President Guest Experience, said: “The introduction of these kits is not about providing brand names to our Business Class guests. It is about intelligent design, functionality and providing them with products which are attractive, natural, useful and re-usable. Collaborating with relevant, progressive lifestyle brands such as LUXE City Guides and Scaramouche + Fandango has enabled us to tailor amenities to the requirements of our guests while retaining all the authentic charm and sophistication of the Etihad Airways brand.

“Etihad Airways continues to reimagine the flying experience, setting a new benchmark for innovation and luxury. The introduction of these kits is part of a much bigger journey which was started with the introduction of our new revolutionary cabins on the flagship Airbus A380 and Boeing 787s, and the new service concepts introduced fleet-wide. These collectible kits also reflect the global nature of our business, while simultaneously highlighting the inspiration, style and unique qualities of our home, Abu Dhabi.”

Simon Westcott, LUXE City Guides Chief Executive Officer, said: “Etihad Airways offers one of the best inflight experiences in the world. In partnering with LUXE City Guides to create its new Business Class amenity kits, Etihad helps ensure that the premium experience extends long after its guests have landed. It is great to be working with fellow innovators.”

The comfort kit features a luxurious facial moisturiser enriched with vitamin E and made with anti-oxidants and essential oils to combat fatigue and the lower humidity levels in the cabin. Triglycerides and essential oils rebalance the skin’s natural moisture. A honey and shea butter lip balm enriched with vitamin E keeps lips hydrated. The new kits also include a sleep pack containing socks and eyemask, a care pack containing cotton pads and earbuds, in addition to a dental pack and earplugs.

The Abu Dhabi kit uses a unique design pattern inspired by the rich architectural heritage of the Emirate, translated into a style best described as Arabian Modernism. The pattern reflects the Etihad Airways’ brand and colour palette.

Team from Australian National University wins against native Arabic speakers in Qatar

Source: ANU, CAIS. The debating team.

A team of four students from the Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies (CAIS) represented Australia and the Australian National University (ANU) at the Third International Universities Arabic Debating Championship held in Doha, Qatar from 26 to 29 April 2015.

Despite the challenges of debating with native speakers of Arabic, the ANU team - Yara Hussien, Thomas Randall, Derek Bayley and Andrew Findell-Aghnatios, led by CAIS PhD scholar Adel Abdel Ghafar - was commended for its performance both by other teams and the event organisers. The ANU team also won against a team of native Arabic speakers from the American University of the Emirates, which involved debating Internet censorship and democratisation.

“I am very proud of the team’s performance,” Abdel Ghafar said. “Their performance is a reflection on both the student’s debating skills and the world-class quality of the Arabic programme at CAIS.”

This was the second time ANU students had participated, last competing in the event in 2013. Supported by the Qatar Foundation, the four-day biannual event seeks to unlock human potential by fostering a culture of discussion and debate, helping shape the global citizens of the future and creating the intellectual leaders of tomorrow.

The championship saw a huge increase in the number of participants this year, with 67 teams representing 33 countries competing. Teams from non-Arab speaking universities came from Australia, India, Pakistan, Brunei, Malaysia, France, Poland, China, Korea, Kazakhstan, the US and Germany.
