Agoda: 55% Increase in Eid accommodation searches

Digital travel platform Agoda has recorded a 55% month-on-month increase in accommodation searches from travellers in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore for check-ins during the festive period of 20 to 23 March 2026. Bali was the most-searched destination for travellers from these three countries, with Yogyakarta, Bandung, Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo following closely as prime destinations.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri, or Eid al-Fitr, marks the end of the month of Ramadhan and is a time for reunion, celebration and meaningful time with loved ones. Travel demand typically rises as people return to hometowns, visit family, or plan a short break after a month of spiritual focus. During this festive season, while close-to-home destinations, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand remain popular, Agoda is also observing increased interest in destinations that offer a different kind of festive getaway.

"Traditionally, travel during cultural festive periods meant returning home, but we're observing a change in preference as many look beyond familiar destinations. Japan and China, for example, are growing in appeal this festive season as they become more accessible through measures like eased visa rules and new, unique experiences," said Andrew Smith, Senior VP, Supply, Agoda.

"When travel is made easier, interest follows. Hotels that recognise these trends and remove booking friction - by offering localised experiences, tailored content in the traveler's language and convenient local payment options - will be best placed to capture growth this festive season."

China ranked as one of the top five destinations for travellers from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, with a 7% year‑on‑year increase in accommodation searches during the Eid festive period. This momentum was amplified by the market's recent expansion of visa‑exemption and eased transit rules, which have reduced friction for travellers, according to China's State Council.

Meanwhile, in Japan's increase in appeal comes as the country looks to grow inbound tourism over the longer term. According to reports by the World Economic Forum, the shift comes as the government has set a target of attracting 60 million foreign tourists annually by 2030, alongside wider efforts to welcome a broader range of travellers.

The upcoming festive travel season presents hoteliers with the chance to finetune their localisation strategies to better accommodate various travellers' needs, such as implementing halal-friendly options.

Agoda's Tailored to Win report shows that reflecting cultural, linguistic and behavioural preferences is increasingly vital for hotels and accommodation partners looking to stand out. According to Agoda, hoteliers can strengthen appeal this Eid season by clearly addressing questions what travellers tend to decide on first, including meal options, prayer access, family suitability and proximity to relevant attractions. Halal-certified meals, prayer facilities and other Muslim-friendly amenities should be highlighted, the company recommended.

The report also found that hotels implementing advanced localisation strategies saw a 59% positive impact on revenue per available room (RevPAR).

Lazada Indonesia shares Eid Al-Fitr shopping picks

E-commerce has become a practical option for Indonesian consumers to identify and purchase products that support their their mudik (homecoming) journeys ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

Erika Agustine, Commercial Director of Lazada Indonesia, said that demand across several categories—including automotive, home appliances, and electronics—typically peaks ahead of Eid. This is driven by two key moments: the mudik journey and the Eid celebration spent with family at home.

"Consumers are looking for products that support smoother travel while also meeting household needs during family gatherings. E-commerce has become a preferred shopping destination as consumers can easily access a wide selection of authentic, high-quality products from trusted brands. Lazada Indonesia is supporting this demand through a range of attractive offers, including discounts of up to 95%," she said.

To help consumers prepare for Eid more conveniently, Agustine provided some recommendations:

Source: Lazada via Canva. Top left: a family dressed for Eid. Top right: a reliable motorcycle for the homecoming journey. Bottom left: a portable blender for fresh juice anywhere. Bottom right: A washing machine to save time and effort.

A reliable motorcycle

Motorcycles remain a popular transportation choice for many mudik travellers as they are more agile in navigating traffic along busy routes.

Newer models such as the New Honda Beat Deluxe come equipped with technologies like smart keyless systems with anti-theft and immobiliser features. Purchasing vehicles through e-commerce platforms can also provide additional benefits such as special promotions and flexible payment options, including through a combination of cash and credit cards.

A portable blender

During long mudik trips, maintaining healthy food and drink intake is important. A portable blender can be a practical tool for preparing fresh juice anytime. Blenders such as the Ninja Blast Portable Blender feature a compact design, leak-proof functionality, and rechargeable battery power. In addition to preparing juice, portable blenders can also be used to blend baby food while travelling, or when staying in one's hometown.

A washing machine

For some families, the Eid holiday also means managing household tasks without the help of domestic assistants who have returned home. With a large capacity that can handle laundry for the whole family at once and relatively low electricity consumption, twin-tub washing machines such as those from Sanken help save both time and energy costs. A built-in spin dryer also helps clothes dry faster, even during the rainy season.

Staying active

For fitness enthusiasts, a sports smartwatch can help maintain workout routines even during vacation. Smartwatches such as the Garmin Forerunner typically feature GPS and activity tracking capabilities that monitor distance, time, speed, and pace during runs or workouts.

Entertainment on the go

Homecoming journeys on public transportation such as trains or airplanes are often accompanied by crowded and noisy environments. Headphones such as Sony Noise-Cancelling Headphones can help reduce surrounding noise.

Polished looks

For many people, Eid is a moment to look their best. Hair stylers such as the Dyson Airwrap can be used to dry, straighten, or curl hair. Those that come with a carry case travel well.

Augustine reminded consumers to plan their purchases ahead of time so that products can arrive when needed.

"Consumers can now take advantage of instant or same-day delivery options to ensure their orders arrive on time. With the wide delivery network of e-commerce platforms, products can even be shipped directly to one's hometown. This approach is also more convenient as travelers do not have to carry gifts themselves during the journey," she concluded.

Agoda: Nearly 80% increase in accommodation searches

As the Hari Raya (Eid al Fitr) holiday approaches, digital travel platform Agoda has seen* an almost 80% month-on-month increase in accommodation searches from travellers in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore for this year's festive period. This increase reflects a growing interest in travel, with travellers actively planning their getaways.

Hari Raya or marks the end of Ramadhan, a month of fasting, reflection, and community for Muslims worldwide. It is a time for joy, connection, and celebration. For many, it's also the perfect opportunity to travel, whether to visit loved ones, return to hometowns, or to enjoy a holiday after a month of spiritual focus.

Travellers are showing an interest in exploring beyond their immediate regions, Agoda said. Thailand and Japan lead the way as the top two most-searched destinations among travellers from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, suggesting a desire for diverse cultural experiences during the festive break. Mainland China, South Korea, and Taiwan complete the top five.

When looking at the city level, Bangkok is the most-searched destination, followed by Tokyo and Seoul. Hong Kong secured the fourth spot, while Taipei rounds out the top five.

Gede Gunawan, Senior Country Director Indonesia at Agoda said: "Hari Raya is a time when travel becomes an important part of the celebration. It's great to see people looking forward to reconnecting with family, exploring new destinations, or simply taking a well-deserved break. The increase in searches compared to the previous month reflects the anticipation for travel and the desire to use the holiday for travel opportunities.

"At Agoda, we aim to ensure that wherever travellers choose to go, they can find the right accommodation at an affordable price, with a seamless booking experience."

*The data provided is based on Agoda accommodation searches for check-ins between 29 March and 1 April 2025. The comparison is between searches conducted from 1-25 January 2025 and 1-25 February 2025.

Singapore's Office of the Mufti explains determination of Shawwal

On May 1, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, Mufti of Singapore, announced that since the crescent for the month of Shawwal had already set after sunset according to astronomical calculations, May 2 would mark the 30th day of Ramadhan, and Eid would be on May 3.

The announcement caused confusion as neighbouring Malaysia announced that it would be celebrating Eid on May 2, as did a number of other countries around the world. This prompted the Office of the Mufti in Singapore to issue a statement on how the last day of Ramadhan is calculated:

Based on the guidance of the Prophet , scholars use two primary criteria, hisab (calculation based on the science of astronomy) and rukyah (رقى, the sighting of the moon) to determine whether the crescent moon is visible.

According to the statement, it is generally extremely difficult in Singapore to see the crescent moon because of predominantly cloudy conditions. Thus, Singapore uses commonly-agreed criteria used by the MABIMS countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore) in determining the sighting of the crescent moon. This methodology is known as imkan ar-rukya.

The imkan ar-rukya criteria was most recently revised in 2021 based on more than 700 data points of crescent sightings from around the world. The new criteria considers two parameters during sunset on the 29th day of the Islamic month – the elevation of the crescent moon (which must exceed three degrees), and the degree of elongation of the sun and the moon (which must exceed 6.4 degrees).

Based on these criteria the crescent moon was not visible in Singapore at sunset on 29 Ramadhan. The Office of the Mufti together with experts in the science of astronomy (الفلك, falak) confirmed this by attempting to conduct a physical sighting of the new moon. This was unsuccessful.

While the religious authorities of other MABIMS countries reported that the crescent moon was visible, they only saw it at selected sites in their own territories.

Although the results differed, all MABIMS countries used the same method of determination which was based on the principles and guidance of the Prophet ﷺ, and their individual results are valid in their respective contexts, with Ramadhan in each country being a maximum of 30 days.

The Office of the Mufti also shared a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim that Mu’awiyah fasted till Friday whereas the rest of the Prophet's ﷺ companions fasted till Saturday based on the differences in sighting the crescent moon in the cities of Sham and Madinah. When asked why they did not simply standardise the fasting period, Ibn ‘Abbas replied that such determination (in following the geographical location of a person) was what had been taught by the Prophet ﷺ, even though it would cause different start and end dates for Ramadhan among Muslims.

Muis announces logistics for Eid prayers

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) together with the mosque sector will open the booking window for Hari Raya (Eid) prayer slots on 28 April 2022 at 10 am. The prayer, which is scheduled to take place on 3 May 2022, will see 66 mosques offering a total of 153,250 spaces.

Each of the 66 mosques will offer at least two sessions of Eid prayers. The first session will be conducted from 7.30 am to 8.15 a.m, and the second session from 8.45 am to 9.30 am. Of these mosques, 15 mosques that, based on data, are expecting bigger attendances will offer a third session from 10 am to 10.45 am. Congregants attending the third session at these selected mosques may walk-in to perform their prayer with no booking of slots required.

Based on attendance patterns and demand throughout Ramadhan, 60 mosques will cater to both male and female congregants while six mosques will cater to only male congregants.

Muis encourages the community to plan accordingly, and to consider going to lesser crowded mosques that are located away from neighbourhoods and housing estates. Muis also asked congregants who are unwell or unable to attend the prayer to cancel their bookings so that others may get the slot.

Details:

Booking of the prayer slots can be made via the Muslim.sg app or https://ourmosque.commonspaces.sg. Browse the list of mosques here.

Muis releases guidelines for Eid al-Fitr

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has issued an advisory in the last week of Ramadhan amid tightened COVID-19 measures in Singapore.

Given that the Multi-Ministry Taskforce (MTF) in Singapore has announced that congregational and other worship services must implement pre-event testing for services involving more than 100 and up to 250 attendees at any one time, Muis will study the feasibility of implementing such pre-event testing procedures at mosques, given the cost and operational considerations involved. The organisation noted that pre-event testing would allow for larger congregational prayers (i.e. up to 250 spaces).

Muis further announced that booking for Eid prayers would open on 11 May 2021 at 10am. Bookings can be made via https://ourmosques.commonspaces.sg or via the Muslim.sg app. Congregants who are unwell or unable to attend the prayer session are advised to cancel their booking so that the space may be given to others.

On Eid eve, the Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir will lead a group of asatizah in the Takbir Raya. This will be broadcast live on SalamSG TV.

On Eid morning, mosques will conduct congregational prayers with full safe management measures in place. Each mosque will hold three prayer sessions. Each session will be limited to 100 congregants, in two zones of 50 persons each. SalamSG TV will broadcast the Mufti’s Eid sermon.

Muis' guidelines for visits during the Eid period include:

- Limiting social gatherings and home visitations to two per day

- Up to five unique visitors each day

- Greet using the 'salam mufti', where one places their hand close to their heart

- Keep masks on when visiting relatives and friends in their homes, when not consuming food and drink

- Avoid sharing of food with others, and consume individual portions

- Stay home if unwell, and see a doctor to get tested when sick; and

- Avoid going to crowded places, and stay home where possible. Muis suggests foregoing physical gatherings and instead connecting digitally.

"Our community has shown great resilience and responsibility throughout Ramadhan in fulfilling our religious obligations. Understandably, many are sad and disappointed, but the new and more contagious variant is a grim reminder that we are still in a pandemic situation. Let us make this Hari Raya season a very safe one where we are vigilant, resilient and united.

"When we follow the safety measures, we are keeping our society and our country safe. As we do so, others will recognise our religion as a religion that protects the well-being of others. This is our contribution that is in keeping with the spirit of ihsan (إحسان)* and kindness which we learn in the month of Ramadhan," said Dr Nazirudin.

Eid holidays extended in Oman

HM Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik of Oman has commanded that the Eid Al-Adha holidays for public and private sectors be extended to 16 Dhulhijjah 1441, corresponding to August 6, 2020, the Oman News Agency has reported. Work officially resumes on 19 Dhulhijjah 1441, August 9.

The Supreme Committee of Oman has asked residents to exercise extreme caution during the Eid al-Adha holidays while a total lockdown to stem COVID-19 is in effect. The committee has requested that the public limit movement during the day and avoid family unions and any other social gatherings, as gathering can cause the virus to spread. The committee has also called for firm enforcement of violations.

Under the lockdown rules, there is no travel between governorates, and a curfew from 7 pm to 6 am. Public places and business outlets are closed.

Singapore mosques to conduct Eid prayers

With safe management measures in place in mosques, and Friday prayers weekly conducted since 26 June, 2020, limited  (Eid Al-Adha) prayers will be conducted at mosques on 31 July 2020, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has announced.

As places are limited, congregants who are unable to obtain a booking are encouraged to conduct prayers at home and tune in to the live broadcast of the Hari Raya sermon by the Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir.

Forty-five mosques will offer three sessions of Hari Raya Haji prayer on the morning of 31 July 2020. Another 20 mosques will offer two sessions of Hari Raya Haji prayers. This will mean a total of 8,750 slots available for these prayers.

The Hari Raya Haji sermon by Dr Nazirudin will be broadcast in Malay (with English subtitles) on SalamSG TV as well as on Mediacorp Radio Warna 94.2FM. The Mufti will deliver his sermon after leading prayers at 8.30 am at Masjid Maarof. SalamSG TV and Warna will also broadcast the takbir (تَكْبِير) before the Hari Raya Haji prayer.

For the benefit of the Indian Muslim community, the sermon will also be delivered in Tamil by Masjid Jamae Chulia and Masjid Al Abrar via their Facebook platforms, and on Bisme Radio. Masjid Malabar will broadcast their sermon in Malayalam and for the benefit of Muslim migrant workers, the sermon will also be delivered in Bengali on SalamSG TV at 9.30 am.

This year, Hari Raya Haji falls on a Friday, so there are two congregational prayers for the Muslim community. The Office of the Mufti has advised that those who did not manage to secure a place to perform Hari Raya prayers in mosques can perform it at home with their families. This is similar to the arrangements for Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid Al-Fitr) and families are again encouraged to watch the Hari Raya sermon online.

In relation to Friday prayers, although the majority of scholars from the Shafiee, Hanafi and Maliki schools of thought are of the opinion that Friday prayer is still wajib (وَاجِب‎, compulsory) for those who have performed Hari Raya prayers on the morning of the day, the Office of the Mufti has advised that this opinion is best applied during normal situations where space and other similar limitations due to the current pandemic are not an issue.

The main priority for the Muslim community is to provide opportunities for as many Muslims as possible to perform Friday prayers, especially those who have not been able to perform them since the resumption of Friday prayers in mosques after the lifting of COVID-19 circuit breaker measures, Muis said. As such, Muslims who are able to secure a slot for the Hari Raya prayer will not need to perform the Friday prayer, and may instead perform the dhuhr prayer (صَلَاة ٱلظُّهْر, midday prayer) and listen to the Friday sermon online.

The 65 mosques currently offering Friday prayers will continue to do so, with the same safety measures in place. As some mosques have started to offer three sessions instead of two, the number of slots available has increased to 9,100.

Individuals who have secured a slot for Friday prayers will not be eligible to obtain a slot for Hari Raya Haji prayers. To provide more opportunities for those who have yet to perform Friday prayers at the mosque, those who have performed Friday prayers prior to 31 July 2020 will also not be eligible to register for a space.

Those who have yet to attain a slot for Friday prayers are still given the flexibility, as advised by the Office of the Mufti, to replace Friday prayers with dhuhr prayers and then tune in to Friday sermons via SalamSG TV.

Muis also asked that congregants who obtained a slot but are unable to come for prayer cancel their bookings, so that others may have an opportunity to register.

All congregants are advised to adhere to the safe management measures in place. This includes not attending if unwell, taking wudhu (ablutions prior to prayers) before coming to the mosque, bringing their own prayer items (prayer mats and a shoe bag), wearing a mask, refraining from talking and physical contact with other congregants while in the mosque, maintaining safe distancing and using the Safe Entry tracing app when entering and exiting the mosques.

Vulnerable individuals - children under 12, those aged above 60, those exhibiting symptoms of acute respiratory infections as well as those with pre-existing chronic medical conditions - are strongly encouraged to refrain from going to the mosque, and to perform their prayers at home instead.

Details:

Registration for slots for Hari Raya prayers and Friday prayers are open via the MuslimSG app and https://ourmosques.commonspaces.sg. Individuals who have secured a slot for Friday prayers will not be eligible to obtain a slot for Hari Raya Haji prayers.

To provide more opportunities for those who have yet to perform Friday prayers at the mosque, those who have performed Friday prayers prior to 31 July 2020 not be eligible to register for a Friday prayers space.
